^^ me everytime someone says something outdated and ill informed about HR.

I’m a huge music lover and one of my favorite albums is The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill by Ms.Lauryn Hill.

The album is meant to educate oneself on love and its various components from complex relationships and heartbreak to motherhood and faith. She touches on it all!

And I bet you’re wondering WTF does this have to do with HR???

Well upon my millionth listen last week I started to think about the miseducation of HR.

Yes, I’m corny and think about HR a lot!

I thought about how people may not understand the real power of HR and how we’re often forced to confront these stereotypes about HR in order to do the work we want to do.

So this quarter, I’m focusing on just that!!

I’m going to look at HR through the lens of our:

  • Role
  • Skills
  • Impact

Let’s look at what that actually means!

Role:

Am I being too bold if I say no job function has changed as dramatically as HR’s in the last few years?

The pandemic absolutely played a part in that and it’s become increasingly clear how multifaceted HR actually is.

From things like crisis management to remote work there’s more being added to HR’s plate than ever before.

And that’s good BUT that can also be tough for people in this role!

So, how do you manage it all?

This quarter I’ll cover things like:

  • What actually is HR’s role?
  • HR isn’t (and shouldn’t) be anyone’s friend
  • When HR doesn’t make the decisions but carries out the decision

And how educating everyone (including ourselves) on HR’s role is crucial.

Skills:

If there’s one thing I won’t STFU about it’s the skills and abilities  required to work in HR.

TBH: this isn’t the job for everyone.

Somedays I even wonder if this job is even for me but that’s a spiral for another day…

There’s so much that comes in when doing this job and as the workplace evolves our skills need to as well.

✨Enter excitement and growth ✨

This quarter I’ll tackle:

  • Skills that are nice to haves vs need to haves in HR
  • Skills and abilities: the difference between learning and what comes naturally
  • What the future looks like for HR
  • Personas of HR leaders

This might actually be the thing I’m *most passionate* about helping HR leaders understand.

📣Because how we talk about our skills and abilities can help us build better relationships, secure new opportunities, or even decide where we want to focus our career.

Impact:

Something I want us all to stop saying is that HR isn’t revenue driving.

Because WE ARE.

Our work is impactful and can help an organization thrive and succeed.

Say it with me: my work makes an impact.

On really hard days I like to hold on to memories of all the times I’ve impacted an organization for the better. It might sound silly but it reminds me to keep effing going

And if you want a pep talk about this, you’re gonna get it!

I’m going to cover:

  • The real impact of HR
  • How we drive business value
  • When we can’t fix things
  • How to prepare yourself for the future

You’ll never wonder “what am I doing here” again.

Maybe…

What’s next:

So, I’ve just outlined my plan for this quarter and I hope you’re pumped.

And I’m coming in HOT as Hades next week with a newsletter dedicated to what exactly our role is, the history of HR and what the future holds for us.

If you read this and got pumped and have something you want me to cover please reply to this email!

I always want to hear from you and what you want and my goal in 2025 is to answer more emails.

Yeah, I said that. 🙂
