SUPPORTING PEOPLE WITH

Surprised to see me in your inbox on a Tuesday?! Well, here I am!  👀

This is a ✨ special edition deep dive ✨ of I Hate it Here. Every now and then you may get one of these from me! 👏

This special edition deep dive is sponsored by Rain.

What's a deep dive?

Deep dives are opportunities for me to collab with specific companies in the HR/People space on topics of joint interest to them, me, and even you! The sponsoring company provides invaluable input on the topic but this edition itself is written, edited, and published by your fave gal, me!

Today, I'm diving into the era of expensive everything and how what HR can actually do about money anxiety…

Let's get into it!

The Era of Expensive Everything: How HR Can Help Reduce Money AnxietyCopy anchor linkCopied

There’s no other way to put it at this point: Life is more expensive than ever right now, and we’re all feeling it.

Rent’s skyrocketing, groceries feel like luxury items, childcare costs are wild, and even your “treat yourself” latte requires financial justification now.

Employees aren’t just financially stretched…they’re emotionally tapped out!

The cost of living crisis goes beyond dollars. It’s also about daily stress, constant anxiety, and the quiet panic that comes from checking your bank balance and whispering, “please be enough.”

Now, as People Leaders, we can’t control the Fed or fix inflation (trust me, if we could, we would have by now), but we can design programs that make life just a little easier for employees who are doing their best to keep up.

And no, I’m not talking about another “financial wellness” app no one uses after the onboarding webinar.

I’m talking about real flexibility, the kind that gives people control over their money, not just spreadsheets about it.

And that’s where earned wage access (EWA) can help!

Most people still think of payday as a twice-a-month event, but EWA changes that.

It lets employees access their own earned money when they need it, without immediately relying on loans.

EWA offers a little bit of breathing room, and today we’re going to get super clear on:

✅ What EWA actually is

✅ Why it’s quietly reshaping the future of pay

✅ And how it can make a meaningful impact in your organization

Because in my humble (and slightly caffeinated) opinion, EWA isn’t being discussed nearly enough in HR, and it’s time we fix that!

What Even Is Earned Wage Access?Copy anchor linkCopied

Let’s start simple: EWA means employees can get paid for the work they’ve already done, without waiting for the next payroll cycle.

So, for example, let’s say your employee finishes a shift on Thursday and their rent is due Friday.

Instead of stressing or swiping a credit card, they can transfer their earned wages right away through an app. It’s not borrowing since it’s their money and they’re just getting it faster.

Sobering stat: Most people live paycheck to paycheck, and nearly half have no emergency savings.

That means even one unexpected bill (like a car repair or medical copay) can push people into overdraft or predatory payday-loan territory!

EWA helps close that gap. It’s like giving your team a safety net without actually changing salaries or adding another benefit line item.

The concept sounds small, but its impact on a lot of people can mean less stress, fewer financial emergencies, and a little more dignity.

The Emotional ROI of EWACopy anchor linkCopied

🫠 It should be no surprise to you that money stress is one of the biggest productivity killers at work.

A PwC employee wellness survey found that one in three employees are distracted by financial worries, and 57% say it directly impacts their performance! THAT’S OVER HALF.

Translation: you certainly can’t expect peak engagement when someone’s trying to figure out how to cover next week’s daycare bill, or how to stretch their paycheck to the 15th.

I feel like EWA changes that dynamic in three key ways:

1. Less Stress, More Stability ⚓

When employees know they can access their pay if an emergency hits, anxiety drops.

In fact, Rain collected data from a survey of employees using their app for a year and found that 79% of users felt less stressed and more productive once they started using EWA tools!

That sounds like practical relief to me!

2. Retention That’s Real ☮️

People stay where they feel supported, and financial wellness drives loyalty.

The cost of replacing a single employee can be 1.5–2x their salary, so every ounce of retention matters to your org!

EWA helps you build that sense of trust and goodwill.

When an employee sees that their company actually cares about their day-to-day reality and not just their quarterly output, they’re far more likely to stay. It’s that simple!

3. Flexibility That Fits Real Life 💪

We live in an on-demand world. You can get coffee, groceries, ridesharing, the latest movie and probably your next existential crisis delivered in under an hour.

I should know, I’ve been there.

But somehow, payroll hasn’t evolved since the ‘90s!

EWA modernizes pay by letting employees decide when payday happens.

It’s autonomy disguised as convenience, and it sends a powerful message: we trust you to manage your money.

Imagine if payroll wasn’t just a rigid schedule, but a design choice? A people-first experience that reflects how we actually live now…

That’s the emotional upgrade EWA delivers.

Why This Conversation Matters Right NowCopy anchor linkCopied

The economy couldn’t be any more confusing, and thinking about it kinda gives me a migraine.

Right now, some industries are hiring, others are shrinking, and inflation still outpaces income growth.

That means HR leaders are bracing for another year of tough compensation talks.

Pay-transparency laws are tightening, but transparency alone doesn’t fix the deeper issue, which is timing.

Employees want to understand not just how much they earn, but when and how they’ll see it.

This is where I believe EWA shifts the entire narrative.

It’s not just about compensation, it’s about cash flow. And cash flow is what determines whether someone can pay rent on time, buy groceries, or fill their gas tank.

Taking the emotion out of pay conversations means getting a better understanding of how people feel about their pay and how EWA changes that entire experience.

It takes one of the most outdated parts of work (waiting to get paid) and turns it into something flexible, human, and actually useful!

Now, let’s talk about how Rain is doing this right.

Rain isn’t just another fintech jumping on the payroll bandwagon. They’re one of the few EWA providers who understand that this is about people first, and tech second.

Their model is simple, ethical, and works in harmony with HR! It’s music to my ears.

Rain’s approach is built on three core pillars:

1. Designed with Integrity

Rain’s EWA solution is transparent and employer-controlled.

Employees can withdraw earned wages directly into their accounts without any hidden fees or weird, shady interest rates.

Guardrails ensure responsible use, while financial wellness tools help employees plan smarter!

2. Built for Efficiency

Implementation is quick and there’s no cost to employers.

I’m talking “launch in 45 days or less” kind of quick!

Rain integrates directly with your existing payroll and HCM systems, so you stay in control without adding any operational headaches.

3. Delivered with Care

Rain’s 24/7 support and industry-leading NPS scores prove they’re a worthy partner.

Employers get a seamless rollout, and employees get real-time, human help when they need it.

What makes Rain stand out is how it combines empathy with infrastructure.

It’s a tool that solves real problems for real people, without turning payroll into a fintech experiment!

Empathy Is a Business Strategy Copy anchor linkCopied

At the end of the day, financial stress is as much of a workplace problem as it is a personal problem.

It fuels burnout, absenteeism, and turnover, no matter how many wellness Slack channels or pizza Fridays you throw at it!

And of course, EWA won’t fix every financial challenge, but it’s a great start.

It’s a tangible, low-lift way to show your people you see them and that their well-being matters.

That’s what Rain delivers!! A model that’s ethical, easy to implement, and proven to make employees feel more secure, supported, and satisfied.

So as you start sketching out your 2026 benefits strategy, ask yourself:

What would your workplace look like if employees didn’t have to wait to feel financially stable?

Because giving your people access to their own money isn’t radical. It’s just the right thing to do.

And if you’re ready to bring that future forward, well…I’ve lowkey been waiting the whole article to say this:

It’s time to make it Rain.
