Now, the other reason I'm in your inbox today...

💵 Workers say they’re staying put out of fear, and it’s likely costing employers

The TL;DR: The quit rate just hit a 10-year low, and workers aren't staying because they love their jobs either. Economic anxiety has 62% of workers choosing job security over new opportunities, and people are pushing back retirement by nearly FOUR YEARS just to stay afloat. This is fear-based retention, and it looks nothing like loyalty.

My POV: Low turnover is one of those things that feels like a win until you look at why it's happening.

They're staying because they have nowhere else to go!

The second the market loosens up, those people are gone, and in the meantime, you're managing a team running on anxiety.

This is exactly the kind of data that should make every HR leader rethink what "low turnover" actually means for their org. Check on your people!

🎙️ Mic Drop Moment:Copy anchor linkCopied

“Stand 10 toes down on your decisions.”Copy anchor linkCopied

On the mic this week: Jessica Winder is a people leader, career coach, and one of only people I trust to come on my podcast and say exactly what everyone else is thinking. She’s built her career calling out broken systems in leadership and performance (and somehow still getting invited back to meetings). Based in Las Vegas, she’s balancing building communities, coaching careers, and raising two sets of twins, which honestly explains the level of chaos tolerance she brings to every conversation.

Pin this:

  • Leaders love frameworks until they actually have to use them to make a decision. Then suddenly…we need 12 more meetings.
  • Promotions into management roles are happening with zero training and zero desire from the person getting promoted.
  • Employees are expected to succeed in roles where no one can clearly define what “good” even looks like.
  • Companies say they value transparency, then immediately start playing games with compensation conversations.

My H*ly Sh*t Moment: We keep blaming employees for broken systems when the reality is most companies are operating on unclear expectations and decisions nobody wants to actually own.

📊 Data Is My Love Language:Copy anchor linkCopied

Stat: HR skills are among the most sought-after in the job market, Indeed reports

My spiral: HR skills show up in 27% of all job postings, and most of those aren't even HR jobs!

Turns out every manager and team lead needs to know how to handle people, which is funny because those same orgs will turn around and cut the People team first when budgets get tight.

Maybe start treating HR like the business-critical function the JOB MARKET already knows it is!

🗣️ UNMUTE YOURSELF

We talk a lot about best practices in HR but honestly, that phrase has become a bit of a shield in my opinion.

It lets us skip the harder question of whether something actually works for our people, or just looks good on paper.

So I want you to think about your org and the stuff that's been handed down as gospel for a minute.

“What's one best practice that you think does more harm than good?”

🛠️ TRY THIS TOMORROW:

Growth conversations don't have to wait for review season, you know!

Your people are telling you what they need, but you just have to ask the right questions. Here’s one to try in your next 1:1:

"What's something you've outgrown in your current role?"

👂 OVERHEARD IN SAFE SPACE

The gap between what HR actually does and what people think we do is honestly the longest-running PR crisis in corporate history.
