this changes culture forever
SUPPORTING PEOPLE WITH

Hi y'all!
Surprised to see me in your inbox on a Thursday?! Well, here I am!
This is a ✨ special edition deep dive ✨ of I Hate it Here. Every now and then, you may get one of these from me! 👏
This special edition deep dive is sponsored by WebMD Health Services.
What's a deep dive?
Deep dives are opportunities for me to collab with specific companies in the HR/People space on topics of joint interest to them, me, and even you! The sponsoring company provides invaluable input on the topic but this edition itself is written, edited, and published by your fave gal, me!
Today, I'm discussing how wildly important well-being at work is right now.
Let's get into it!
Well-Being at Work Isn’t Optional AnymoreCopy anchor linkCopied

People are TIRED, and I’m not talking about the “I need a nap” kind of tired, either.
I’m talking about the deep, soul-level exhaustion that comes from holding it together through uncertainty, layoffs, economic chaos, and whatever new flavor of stress this quarter brings!
Literally everywhere you look, something’s gotta give.
Mothers are leaving the workforce in record numbers.
People are choosing self-preservation over promotion. (I don't blame them)
And HR leaders are walking a tightrope between doing what’s right for your people and what your CFO thinks the budget allows.
Meanwhile, we’ve got AI automating workflows but not empathy, rising expectations without rising support, and a culture that still, after all these years, mistakes burnout for ambition.
It’s a hot ass mess, y’all!
And that’s exactly why employee well-being is an absolute non-negotiable.
Companies love to talk about productivity, but here’s the glaringly obvious point they always seem to miss: people don’t perform at their best when they’re running on fumes.
Period.
A paycheck doesn’t replace psychological safety, and Pizza Party Fridays have NEVER EVER fixed chronic burnout!
Thankfully, WebMD Health Services understands all of this.
They’ve been in the well-being game for 25 years (so yes, they were doing this before it was trendy).
Their mission has always been simple but powerful: to empower well-being in everyone.
And unlike most of the wellness noise flooding LinkedIn right now, they’ve got real data, real experts, and real receipts.
So, let’s dig into why well-being matters more than ever, and why the companies that invest in it now will be the ones still thriving in five years and beyond.
Good for People = Good for BusinessCopy anchor linkCopied

Here’s what the numbers say, and they’re lowkey kinda wild:
According to WebMD’s latest data, employees who feel their organization cares about their well-being are 56% more engaged, 34% more likely to stay, and 37% less likely to burn out.
As far as I’m concerned, that’s as much of a culture win as it is a bottom-line win!
Because disengagement, turnover, and burnout are expensive. 💰
Replacing a single employee can cost up to twice their salary, and no one needs another “we can’t fill this role” Slack message haunting them for six months.
My point is that being good to people is good business.
When your employees feel valued, seen, and supported physically, mentally, and financially, they work smarter, stay longer, and care more deeply about your org's mission.
WebMD’s Well-Being Trends Report for 2026 drives this home: companies with strong well-being cultures outperform on retention, innovation, and resilience.
So maybe it’s time to stop asking if you can afford to invest in well-being and start asking if you can afford not to?
You Can’t Optimize ExhaustionCopy anchor linkCopied

If there’s one universal truth right now, it’s that everyone’s tired.
We’ve glamorized grind culture to the point of absurdity, and it’s created a workforce that’s technically logged in but emotionally checked out.
And here’s the kicker…burnout isn’t even about just workload anymore!
It’s also about emotional disconnection, lack of flexibility, and leaders who think self-care means forwarding an article about breathing exercises. 🙄
WebMD’s research shows that when organizations actively support well-being, burnout plummets!
Of course, none of this is rocket science, but support doesn’t mean adding a mindfulness app and calling it a day.
It means embedding care into the culture itself.
That might look like leaders openly modeling boundaries (yes, even you, always-on execs), or companies that actually encourage people to USE their PTO instead of hoarding it out of guilt.
It’s about moving well-being from the margins to the middle, from a perk to a pillar.
Because when employees feel emotionally and mentally balanced, everything improves: decision-making, collaboration, creativity. You name it!
And if you want proof, WebMD’s 2026 Wellness Calendar breaks down how consistent, intentional efforts throughout the year create long-term cultural change.
Genuine Well-Being Is the Next Competitive AdvantageCopy anchor linkCopied

We’re entering a new era where people have options, and you know what that means?
The best performers aren’t staying at companies that treat well-being like an afterthought.
Telling folks you have a vending machine and a foosball table may have worked in 2012, but employees aren’t going for that anymore.
They’re going where their humanity is valued!
Top talent is looking for workplaces that treat them like human beings with nervous systems, not productivity machines that magically regenerate overnight.
And honestly? They should. I love that for them.
Because while some execs still treat well-being as a budget item, the smartest organizations are correctly treating it as a growth engine.
They know investing in employee health, flexibility, and support systems now will pay off in innovation, loyalty, and reputation later!
For example, look across Europe. Countries that have embedded well-being into policy and practice are happier, and they have healthier economies.
BRB looking for jobs there.
Meanwhile, the US remains one of only like six developed nations without paid federal leave.
Yuck.
And we wonder why people are struggling to keep up!!!
Companies that truly invest in well-being (not performatively, not occasionally, but intentionally) become magnets for the talent everyone else is chasing.
We’re talking:
- Managers who don’t glamorize burnout
- Leaders who model boundaries without apology
- Cultures where psychological safety isn’t a buzzword
- Support systems that don’t disappear during budget season
This is the competition now.
This is the differentiator.
This is the new employer brand currency.
So, Where Do You Even Start?Copy anchor linkCopied

Let’s take the pressure off: building a culture of well-being doesn’t have to mean massive new programs or six-figure budgets.
(Although, if you’ve got the budget, then by all means, go for it!)
What matters is intentionality.
You can start by aligning your well-being strategy with your company’s mission.
If you value innovation, encourage curiosity through learning and mental breaks.
If you value community, create team-based wellness challenges that promote connection.
Next…LISTEN.
Ask employees what they actually need instead of just assuming.
Maybe it’s better mental health coverage. Maybe it’s flexible hours. Maybe it’s a manager who doesn’t ping them at 10 PM to check in.
WebMD’s How to Get Leadership Support for Employee Well-Being is a great resource for building internal buy-in and speaking the language of your C-suite!
Because, as we’ve probably all experienced, sometimes HR’s biggest obstacle is convincing, not care.
The bottom line here is that when well-being is woven into daily life, the ROI takes care of itself.
